What the program funds
The Forestry Research program funds a wide range of research activities aimed at extending the fundamental research efforts of the U.S. Forest Service. Awards support projects in forest inventory and analysis, climate change adaptation, sustainable forest management, wildlife habitat conservation, invasive species control, and development of wood-based products. The program also funds initiatives to enhance forestry education, outreach, and workforce development.

Examples of funded projects
Fiscal Year2025: The project made substantial progress toward reconstructing historical forest conditions using extensive tree?ring datasets from both broad landscape plots and a rare 9?hectare old?growth site. Analyses using approximately 170 half?hectare plots advanced significantly, with a full manuscript on historical forest structure completed by the project’s post?doctoral researcher and now under co?author review, with journal submission anticipated by year’s end. Parallel work examining historical spatial patterns of tree groups is progressing using the same dataset. At the Manitou Experimental Forest, all trees from the original 1974 inventory have been dated and incorporated into a spatial dataset, and all 1,880 cut stumps have been collected, with two?thirds dated to date and full completion expected by November 2025. Once stump locations are verified, the complete dataset will be ready for analysis, positioning the project to deliver a comprehensive reconstruction of historical forest structure across multiple spatial scales.
