What the grant funds

The objective of the State Process for Informing Consumers of Recalls Grant program is to establish a recall notification program in a state to improve traffic safety in the following areas: developing a methodology for determining open recalls on motor vehicles, informing owners and lessees of the open recalls at the time of registration, and evaluating through the analysis of completed recalls the performance of the notification program. The State shall develop and implement a process for informing each applicable owner and lessee of a motor vehicle of any open recall on the vehicle at the time of registration in the State. The State shall also report to NHTSA what processes and methodologies were used to achieve its goal to notify owners of safety recalls. NHTSA will review those processes and potentially share, in part, or as a whole, with other stakeholders for future implementation. The funding opportunities are awarded on a competitive basis for projects that will meet the conditions of the grant.
