# About Well Told Grants

Source: https://welltoldgrants.com/about/

> Well Told Grants is a free, independent website for finding US federal grants. Next to every open opportunity it shows the program's award history from USAspending.gov, so you can see who won before, how much they received and where, before you decide to apply.

## Why we built it

Finding a grant is only the first step. Deciding whether it is worth applying for is harder, and the official listings rarely help. A notice gives the deadline and the maximum award, but it won't mention that most of the money went to state agencies, that the typical award was a fraction of the ceiling, or that nobody in your state has won it in five years.

That history is public. Every federal grant award is reported to USAspending.gov. We join it to the open opportunities on Grants.gov, so each listing comes with the track record of the program behind it.

## What we cover

We cover federal grants: every open and forecast opportunity on Grants.gov, and every federal grant program with awards in the last five fiscal years. We also cover private foundations, from the grants they report to the IRS on Form 990-PF. We do not list loans, contracts or scholarships unless a federal agency posts them as a grant.

## What we are not

We are not a government agency and we are not affiliated with one. We do not write applications or take a cut of awards. The official notice on Grants.gov is always the final word on deadlines and eligibility, and every listing links to it.

The site is free to use, with no account. The [methodology](/methodology/) explains where each number comes from, and the [data page](/data/) lets you download it.
